Route Planning and Clean Air Zone Guide for Commercial Drivers
Planning a delivery between Bristol Airport and Avonmouth Industrial Estate? Whether you're transporting urgent business documents, commercial parcels, equipment or freight, choosing the right route can make a difference to your delivery schedule and operating costs.
Bristol Airport, located at Lulsgate Bottom, serves businesses across Bristol and the South West. Avonmouth, with its industrial estates, warehouses and port facilities, is another important destination for commercial transport.
For couriers, van drivers and logistics operators, understanding the roads connecting these locations — and Bristol's Clean Air Zone (CAZ) requirements — is an important part of planning an efficient journey.
Why Route Planning Matters Between Bristol Airport and Avonmouth
The journey between Bristol Airport and Avonmouth can involve several major roads, including the A38, A4174 and M5, depending on your starting point, destination and current traffic conditions.
Choosing a route based solely on distance can overlook other important considerations, such as congestion, roadworks, vehicle restrictions and potential Clean Air Zone charges.
For commercial drivers, these factors can affect arrival times, fuel consumption and delivery costs. If you're working to a tight collection or delivery window, checking your route before setting off can help you plan more effectively.
Understanding Bristol's Clean Air Zone for Commercial Vehicles
Bristol's Clean Air Zone was introduced to improve air quality by charging certain vehicles that do not meet the required emissions standards.
Importantly, not every van or commercial vehicle entering Bristol has to pay a CAZ charge. Whether a charge applies depends on the vehicle's category, emissions compliance and any applicable exemption.
Bristol City Council currently lists the following daily charges for non-compliant vehicles:
Light goods vehicles under 3.5 tonnes: £9 per day.
Heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes: £100 per day.
Buses and coaches: £100 per day.
These figures should always be checked against the latest official guidance before travelling.
If you operate a van, truck or other commercial vehicle, use the official vehicle checker to establish whether your vehicle will be charged. Do not assume that a route avoids the zone simply because it follows a particular motorway or bypass.
You can check the current requirements through Bristol City Council's Clean Air Zone vehicle checker.
Planning a Journey from Bristol Airport to Avonmouth
When travelling between Bristol Airport and Avonmouth Industrial Estate, consider the following before departure:
1. Check your collection and delivery locations. An airport terminal, cargo facility and industrial warehouse may have different access requirements. Confirm the precise addresses and any delivery instructions.
2. Review the route. Use a current navigation service to compare suitable routes via the A38, A4174 and M5 where appropriate. Allow for congestion, roadworks and restrictions affecting your vehicle.
3. Check your vehicle's CAZ status. Confirm whether your vehicle meets the emissions requirements or qualifies for an exemption. If a charge applies, factor it into your operating costs.
4. Allow for loading and access time. Security procedures, warehouse reception, loading bays and restricted access can all affect the time required to complete a delivery.
5. Confirm the delivery window. For time-critical consignments, make sure the collection time, destination and required arrival time are agreed before the journey begins.
No single route is guaranteed to be the fastest or most suitable in every situation. Conditions can change, so check current information before setting off.
Bristol Airport to M5 Interchange Route Guide
1: Leaving Bristol Airport (Northbound to Avonmouth)
The Exit: Leave the Bristol Airport terminal and head North down the A38 towards Bristol.
The Turnoff: Do not continue straight into Bedminster or towards the Ashton Gate stadium. Instead, at the first roundabout, take the left exit onto Colliters Way / A4174 (The South Bristol Link Road).
The Intersection: Follow the A4174 until the next roundabout at the intersection with the A370. Take the exit towards Long Ashton / Clevedon (right).
The Back-Road Link: Take B3128 (Clevedon Road) past Failand, then turn right onto Belmont Hill (B3129) leading up towards Belmont and Abbotts Leigh.
2: Connecting to the M5 Motorway
The Strategic Merge: Join the A369 (Martcombe Road) heading West away from the city. This road takes you directly to M5 Junction 19 (Gordano Roundabout). Also known as Easton Gordano Services Junction.
The Bridge Crossing: Take the M5 Northbound slip road. You will cross safely over the Avonmouth Bridge. Because the motorway network sits entirely outside the CAZ infrastructure, you are completely safe from camera tracking.
The Arrival: Exit the M5 at Junction 18 / 18A (Avonmouth). You will drop straight down onto St Brendan’s Roundabout, placing you directly inside the Avonmouth Industrial Estate without crossing a single charging boundary.
To head from Avonmouth back down to the Airport, simply reverse the exact steps above: M5 Southbound ➔ Junction 19 ➔ A369 ➔ Belmont Hill ➔ A4174 ➔ A38 Southbound.
